Emotions Help Solve the Prisoner’s Dilemma
نویسنده
چکیده
Many philosophies treat emotions as the polar opposite of logic, and an economist would judge emotions as irrational. Taking an evolutionary perspective informs us that emotion is no less rational than any other behaviour, and likely evolved to maximize lifetime utility. Frank (1988) argues that emotions evolved to enable us to sacrifice a short-term benefit for a longer-term gain. Frank’s work is interpreted via a bottom-up evolutionary approach within the framework of the prisoner’s dilemma. Emotions help solve the prisoner’s dilemma by enabling us to cooperate. Emotions allow us to selectively lower our discount rate, and to be effective must be both visible and credible. Credible emotions are achieved by their manifestation in both the iterated prisoner’s dilemma (where they help us cooperate) and the non-repeated prisoner’s dilemma (where they

A non-cooperative Pareto-efficient solution to a single-shot Prisoner's Dilemma
The Prisoner’s Dilemma is a simple model that captures the essential contradiction between individual rationality and global rationality. Although the one-shot Prisoner’s Dilemma is usually viewed simple, in this paper we will categorize it into five different types. For the type-4 Prisoner’s Dilemma game, we will propose a selfenforcing algorithmic model to help non-cooperative agents obtain P...
متن کاملApproval Mechanism to Solve Prisoner’s Dilemma: Comparison with Varian’s Compensation Mechanism
After having played a prisoner’s dilemma, players can approve or reject the other’s choice of cooperation or defection. If both players approve the other’s choice, the outcome is just the result of the chosen strategies in the prisoner’s dilemma; however, if either rejects the other’s choice, the outcome is the result of mutual defection in the prisoner’s dilemma. In theory, such an approval me...
متن کاملThe Effects of Reducing Information on a Modified Prisoner’s Dilemma Game
Participants played a modified prisoner’s dilemma game in which competition was created using a single player. The competition was between the player at the moment and the player in the future. The complexity of the game was increased across experiments. The transition from Experiment 1a to 1b saw the removal of information about future consequences and past behavior. Experiment 2 removed infor...
متن کاملModeling Cooperation between Nodes in Wireless Networks by APD Game
Cooperation is the foundation of many protocols in wireless networks. Without cooperation, the performance of a network significantly decreases. Hence, all nodes in traditional networks are required to cooperate with each other. In this paper, instead of traditional networks, a network of rational and autonomous nodes is considered, which means that each node itself can decide whe...
متن کاملExploring the impact of positive and negative emotions on cooperative behaviour in a Prisoner’s Dilemma Game
Objective. To explore the influences of discrete positive and negative emotions on cooperation in the context of a social dilemma game. Design. Two controlled studies were undertaken. In Study 1, 69 participants were randomly assigned to an essay emotion manipulation task designed to induce either guilt, joy or no strong emotion. In Study 2, 95 participants were randomly assigned to one of the ...
